About the book
A manuscript, a print, an old building, or an unfamiliar object can begin an inquiry whose consequences exceed the investigator's expectations. In these ghost stories, M. R. James gives learned interests and ordinary routines enough solidity that a small disturbance becomes hard to dismiss. His characters often possess habits of observation without recognising what those habits may expose them to. The narratives build unease through partial evidence, delayed recognition, and glimpses that do not become reassuring when examined more closely. Historical detail supplies atmosphere while also suggesting that the past is not merely available for harmless study. Each story offers a distinct encounter, but the collection repeatedly tests the comfortable belief that knowing about something gives a person control over what it can do.
