About the book

Sarah H. Bradford gathers episodes from Harriet Tubman's life, presenting her escape from slavery and repeated efforts to bring other enslaved people to freedom. The account moves between perilous journeys, family obligations, religious conviction, and Tubman's service during the Civil War. Letters and supporting testimony accompany the narrative, which was prepared partly to raise money for a woman whose extraordinary work had not secured her material comfort. This is Bradford's early Scenes in the Life of Harriet Tubman, not her later expanded biography. Its admiration is unmistakable, and Tubman's voice reaches the reader through an author's arrangement and contemporary witnesses. That mediation makes the book both a biographical record and an artifact of advocacy.
