Selected Poems

Robert Frost

Rural work, conversation, and remembered choices become occasions for poems that resist easy reassurance.

About the book

Frost's selection draws from A Boy's Will, North of Boston, and Mountain Interval, placing brief lyrics beside dramatic encounters. A pasture, a wall, a woodpile, or a household conversation can appear familiar before an unexpected tension changes the scene. Home Burial and The Death of the Hired Man depend on differences between speakers, while poems such as Birches and The Road Not Taken make reflection part of the event they describe. The speaking voices are carefully made, not simply transcripts of country wisdom. This collection rewards attention to hesitation, qualification, and the point at which an image stops behaving like a lesson. Its range includes welcome and companionship, but also loneliness, grief, and the difficulty of understanding another person's needs.
