About the book
Escaping a brutal pursuer, Olivia encounters Conan after the destruction of his fighting companions. Together they cross the waters of the Vilayet and reach an island that appears to offer safety. Its abandoned buildings, strangely lifelike iron figures, and signs of an unseen presence soon disturb that hope. The arrival of a ship introduces a further danger, making concealment and escape harder to separate from confrontation. Olivia's fear and growing trust in Conan provide a human thread through the sequence of pursuit, exploration, and violence. Howard makes the island's physical isolation essential to the suspense: threats arrive from the sea, the forest, and a past that the ruined structures have not entirely surrendered.
