About the book
Tish Carberry is supposed to be recovering in hospital when a frightened nurse reports that a dead man's body has disappeared. Convinced that someone must take charge, Tish refuses to withdraw and recruits her friends Aggie and Lizzie into the unfolding investigation. Lizzie's narration preserves both Tish's commanding version of events and the inconvenient details that undermine it. The volume continues beyond the hospital episode into further adventures involving an automobile and a boat, allowing the three women's contrasting temperaments to generate trouble across different settings. Rinehart uses suspense without surrendering the comedy of practical mishaps, contested memories, and stubborn self-confidence. Their friendship supplies the continuity: even when the companions disagree about danger, they remain entangled in one another's schemes.

Why read it
Lizzie's affectionately skeptical narration makes Tish's forceful personality as entertaining as the mysteries she encounters.
