About the book

Renfro Horn notices lights moving inside an old house that its owner claims to have abandoned for the winter. His curiosity leads him to take a newspaper route that will bring him past the property regularly, combining ordinary work with opportunities for observation. A prowler at Judge Wier's window and the disappearance of the judge's daughter turn the local puzzle into something more urgent. The unusual clue of the title gives Renfro evidence that adults may be too quick to dismiss. Rudd frames the adventure around the resourcefulness expected of a reliable newspaper carrier, adding scouting companions, wintry tracks, and suspicious strangers. The resulting juvenile mystery rewards close attention while showing how a familiar neighborhood can conceal activities that only repeated, patient observation reveals.
