About the book

The liner Hyperion travels with formidable defenses, but the unexplained disappearance of other ships suggests that familiar safeguards may no longer suffice. Conway Costigan and Clio Marsden are caught in an attack that draws them into a much larger confrontation involving space pirates and technologically formidable outsiders. Smith builds the adventure through rapidly changing threats, improvised responses, and descriptions of machines whose capabilities can transform the balance of power. The scale expands from individual survival to the vulnerability of whole worlds, while the pace repeatedly turns technical discovery into immediate action. This is the version serialized in Amazing Stories in 1934. It should be approached as that earlier text, rather than assumed to contain the later revisions associated with the Lensman sequence.
