About the book
Little Baron Trump finds inspiration in an old manuscript describing a world within the world and sets out with his dog Bulger to discover its entrance. Their route carries them through northern country toward a difficult descent, after which unfamiliar landscapes and inhabitants demand fresh ingenuity. The Baron narrates his adventures with a mixture of self-importance, curiosity, and confidence in his companion's remarkable abilities. Underground communities supply wonders and comic variations on ordinary customs, while practical dangers prevent the journey from becoming a simple sightseeing tour. Lockwood presents the fantasy through the elaborate apparatus of an explorer's report, including a playful account of the traveler's supposed identity. This English edition dates from 1893 and belongs to a children's adventure tradition of impossible voyages.
