About the book

Dorothy is travelling in California with her cousin Zeb, the horse Jim, and her kitten Eureka when the earth opens beneath them. Their descent begins a succession of encounters with extraordinary inhabitants, and the arrival of the Wizard adds both ingenuity and uncertainty to the party's resources. Vegetable people, dangerous spaces, and creatures with unusual powers make escape a shared practical problem. Baum lets conversation among the travellers carry much of the humour: differences of species, experience, and temperament persist even when everyone needs the same way out. The journey eventually reconnects this strange underground world with Oz. Along the way, the Wizard's willingness to improvise matters at least as much as the impressive authority his title appears to promise.
