About the book

Bradley leaves Fort Dinosaur with companions to investigate whether the enclosing cliffs offer a possible route of escape. Their passage through Caspak's dangerous landscape brings them into contact with beings whose appearance and behaviour challenge what the expedition already believes about the island. Separation and captivity make Bradley's observations inseparable from the need to act on incomplete information. The narrative develops the mysteries of Caspak through the winged Wieroos and through an alliance with a woman whose knowledge becomes essential. As the third part of Burroughs's Caspak sequence, it draws on an established setting and advances questions raised by the earlier adventures. Its speculative scheme is fantastic rather than scientific, using imagined stages of life to organize both the geography of danger and the possibilities of escape.
