About the book

The Crown of Wild Olive opens with lectures on work, traffic, and war, in which John Ruskin asks what a society's labor and spending reveal about its moral priorities. Buildings and manufactured objects become evidence of the values behind them; wealth cannot be judged simply by the amount accumulated. This edition extends well beyond those lectures. It also includes Munera Pulveris, Pre-Raphaelitism, Aratra Pentelici, The Ethics of the Dust, Fiction, Fair and Foul, and The Elements of Drawing. Political economy, sculpture, imaginative dialogue, literary criticism, and practical artistic instruction therefore share the volume. Across these different forms, Ruskin repeatedly links the quality of what people make to the quality of their attention and social relations.
