About the book

Tip's life with Mombi changes when a magical powder gives animation to a figure he has made. His flight with Jack Pumpkinhead leads towards the Emerald City, where the Scarecrow's authority is challenged by General Jinjur's army. Familiar figures such as the Tin Woodman meet new companions, including the Woggle-Bug and a remarkable improvised means of travel. Baum makes identity, intelligence, and usefulness playful questions, allowing a character's outward form to suggest both a limitation and an unexpected resource. The adventure's political reversals are entwined with Mombi's concealed knowledge and the search for a more legitimate order. This second Oz book expands the country through a new traveller, using its changing company to show how cooperation can emerge from abilities that initially appear comically unsuitable.
