About the book

Tork lives precariously among cave-dwellers ruled by the aggressive One-Ear, measuring ordinary dangers through the experience available to his community. The silent passage of a huge ship defeats those familiar explanations. After it disappears, an unexplained compulsion draws him eastward, steadily overwhelming his ability to choose his own course. His encounter with a technologically superior power develops from that initial loss of agency, making resistance a problem before he can even describe the threat. Leinster joins a story of survival and courtship to speculative contact across an enormous imbalance of knowledge. The imagined prehistoric society reflects the adventure conventions of its period; the central conflict concerns whether intelligence and initiative can matter when another power appears capable of directing behavior itself.

Why read it

The limited viewpoint makes alien technology frightening through its immediate effects rather than through technical explanation.
