About the book

This collected volume includes Specimen Days and Collect, November Boughs, and Good-Bye My Fancy, bringing together autobiographical fragments, observations, literary reflections, and public arguments. Memories of youth and city life lead into the Civil War hospital visits in which Whitman's attention settles on particular wounded and dying soldiers. Later nature notes and travel impressions place bodily recovery and patient observation beside questions about democracy and national culture. The changing forms preserve a sense of occasional writing rather than a smoothly continuous autobiography. Whitman repeatedly moves from a person, scene, or sensation toward a larger claim about common life, yet the concrete details can remain more compelling than the claim. The collection reveals the prose practices surrounding his poetic project.
