About the book

Landor imagines exchanges among rulers, philosophers, poets, and other figures separated from the reader by history. The conversations are literary inventions, not recovered transcripts. Their interest lies in the way an argument becomes an encounter between temperaments: wit, patience, vanity, affection, and authority influence what can be said. This selection ranges from Marcellus and Hannibal to Southey and Landor, and includes portions of The Pentameron alongside poems. The variety invites unhurried reading rather than a search for one continuous narrative. A speaker's polished sentence may be persuasive without settling the issue, and the surrounding voice may quietly alter its force. The shorter poems offer another scale of feeling, where restraint and compression replace the expansive opportunities of dialogue.

Why read it
