About the book

Countess Guiccioli combines personal recollection with testimony from others to construct an explicitly sympathetic portrait of Byron. Chapters consider friendships, family affections, religious opinions, courage, faults, and sociability, making character rather than a simple chronology the organizing concern. The defence is itself historically revealing: it shows which accusations mattered and what forms of evidence were thought capable of answering them. Hubert E. H. Jerningham's English translation adds another stage of mediation between the remembered person and the reader. Intimacy can illuminate conduct, but it does not remove partiality. The volume is best read alongside Byron's writing and other accounts, as one substantial voice in the making of his reputation rather than a final resolution of every controversy surrounding him.
