About the book

Somadeva's collection begins by explaining the extraordinary transmission of its tales, then draws readers into interconnected histories of kings, lovers, merchants, ascetics, and supernatural beings. The fortunes of Udayana and his son Naravahanadatta provide continuing threads, but a character's experience repeatedly opens the way to another narrative. Clever stratagems stand beside marvels, and stories may entertain, advise, warn, or answer a problem raised in the surrounding action. The pleasure lies partly in this changing scale: a brief example can unfold into an adventure with its own intricate turns. C. H. Tawney's translation from Sanskrit preserves a large, densely nested story world. Its variety rewards both sustained reading and careful attention to the frames connecting one tale with another.
