About the book
This volume introduces Kierkegaard through selected writings translated by L. M. Hollander. The sequence includes the compressed reflections of Diapsalmata, the banquet voices of In Vino Veritas, material from Fear and Trembling, and writings presented as Preparation for a Christian Life and The Present Moment. Their changing forms matter: aphorism, dramatic conversation, biblical meditation, and religious polemic do not speak in one simple register. Questions about pleasure, commitment, faith, and individual responsibility recur as the selections move toward a confrontation with comfortable public Christianity. Hollander's introduction places the author and the choices in context. The book offers a particular route through Kierkegaard's writing, rather than the complete works or a single systematic philosophical treatise.
