About the book

The Duchesse de Dino's memoirs for 1836–1840 move through Paris, country residences, and journeys beyond France, recording a world in which conversation and social access carry political significance. Reports of ministries, royal households, and public events alternate with judgments of character and reflections on daily life. Talleyrand's presence is important, but the writer's own habits of attention give the record its continuity. This second series was edited with notes and a biographical index by the Princesse Radziwill. Like any selected memoir, it offers a situated perspective rather than a complete view of the societies described. Readers can compare the speed of contemporary impressions with the slower knowledge of hindsight, and notice how private sociability becomes a channel for interpreting public affairs.
